Seismic Events

« It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage ».

There is very little warning when an earthquake will occur and no way prepare for the damage that can happen. One of the most serious nonstructural dangers is glass breakage in the affected area. Many injuries and lives are lost due to these natural disasters. Earthquakes cause building structures to shake and twist. This type of motion can easily shatter windows in their frames creating hazardous conditions during and after the earthquake.

Johnson Window Films Trident film line offer an effective preventive measure to decrease the dangers that broken glass can cause. Professional installation coupled with an anchoring retention system will help to provide increased protection from breakage after a seismic event and allow easier retrofits of any existing glass in a building.

Recently, Protective security film was included in a study conducted to investigate the seismic performance of architectural glazing systems. These tests are called « crescendo tests » because of the progressively increasing dynamic shaking to simulate predicted earthquake limits produced a variety of data on various glass types. It was found that applied safety film increased resistance to the point at which cracking and crushing occurred while simultaneously increasing the level at which the glass is ejected from or falls out or the frame causing serious hazards to occupants and adjacent pedestrians.
